Project title Heritage Park Project in Jarrow

Project description Located in Jarrow, a dynamic industrial area of Newcastle, the Heritage Park aims to improve local plant and animal life by restoring and creating new habitats. The park features artistic structures inspired by the area’s industrial elements. These structures serve as windows through which nature can be seen, framing views of trees and birds’ nests. The adaptable community structure is designed to meet various needs and can be used as an exhibition space, movie theatre, or venue for annual school events. The project creates a space that supports environmental restoration and community engagement simultaneously.

Project citation Manisha’s project is a testament to the power of thoughtful, contextually aware design. It transforms a historically significant site into a living, breathing space that honours its past. Jake Feeney

Project title Dark Waters Marine Conservation Centre

Project description Relics of the British fishing industry in the form of discarded fishing nets litter the former fishing grounds of the coastline of the North East. These ‘Ghost Nets’ are durable and offer opportunities for recycling, repurposing and coastal regeneration. The Dark Waters Marine Conservation Centre aims to galvanise communities, focusing on marine education and conservation. The facility hosts myriad different functions, including exhibition and conference venues, material processing facilities and diver training pools. The scheme comprises materials robust enough to survive the attritional coastal setting, but which are equally sacrificial, as shifting building functions allow redundant parts of the building to be discarded and reclaimed by the sea.

Tutor citation The project thoughtfully balances the delivery of an exemplary facility for education and conservation now, while ensuring the legacy of future habitats for flora and fauna when human occupation of the site has ceased. Will Campbell
