Project title Through the Mist
Project description ‘Through the Mist’ proposes a horticulture centre to rehabilitate Rotherhithe’s derelict gas holder and contaminated landscape. Centred on the theme of water, it celebrates the history of the Docklands, providing sustainable water sourcing and conservation. The project’s programme addresses a lack of local food amenities and promotes a sustainable food supply chain. The existing underground gas tank is repurposed to store and filter rain and flood water, aiding local drainage. Flood resistance is also considered as the building floats with fluctuations in the tank’s water level. Inside, hydroponic growing stations respond to constraints found in its urban setting, proposing an alternative option for production in our densifying cities.
Tutor citation This is an outstanding project that examines multiple contemporary social, environmental and economic challenges. It focuses on adaptive reuse – an urgent need for interior architects and others in construction. Luke Murray, Owain Caruana-Davies, Hwei Fan Liang, Darren Stacey, Alberto Villanueva
