Project title
Construction and Demolition Waste Project

Project description Based in the El Poblenou district of Barcelona, this is a proposal for a facility that supports a non-extraction approach to architecture. It explores construction and its wastage in the city and across Spain, promulgating knowledge and application of materials collected from the construction and demolition industries. The facility offers spaces for the study, exhibition and testing of construction waste reuse, upcycling and experimentation.

Tutor citation This project demonstrates an ethic of action and application against greenwashing. It confronts non-extraction and explores ways in which a new generation of architects is engaging with resourcing, construction and design in their immediate futures.

Hemen Galal

Course MArch Architecture
Studio/unit brief Culture Makers
Project title
Reconstruct Cultural Identity

Project description The project focuses on Hawraman, a mountainous region located within the provinces of Kurdistan and Kermanshah in Western Iran and north-eastern Iraq. Despite a rich history and cultural significance, Hawraman is facing a decline in population, which threatens the fabric of its existence. In response to this, this project is a proposal for a facility for employment and educational opportunities within the village, with an emphasis on empowering women and youth. The result balances both tradition and modern living and is a response to the globalisation of architecture.

Tutor citation Hemen has produced a delightful and personal project that seeks to respond to the life and future aspirations of their home village in Kurdistan. The work imbues a delicate balance of heritage and appropriate social ambition.
