Studio/unit brief A Library of Things for Wolverhampton
Project title Library of Things: Un-locking Wolverhampton

Project description This project responds to the issue of over-consumerism, a legacy of the industrial revolution. The brief called for a ‘Library of Things’, a social enterprise renting out functional items such as tools and instruments, helping to foster a circular economy and place of common learning. Nestled in an industrial area of Wolverhampton alongside both a railway and canal, the design is inspired by the canal and its lock – emblematic of the region’s past and an engineering marvel. Structures form ‘gates’, which symbolically welcome local users onto the site and into the Library.

Tutor citation Nell’s concept provides a comprehensive and sympathetic solution to a multifaceted set of problems by promoting sustainable living practices and mindful consumption habits among local residents. It prioritises community cohesion, integrating features intended to foster interaction and collaboration. Olive White
