Materials in Focus is a new series of free AJ virtual events in which we will be exploring the use of materials in design and how architects can specify and use these materials more sustainably. Each session will be dedicated to a specific material and will be chaired by a member of our AJ editorial team.
The first session focuses on brick, for which Alice Brownfield, Michael Dillon and Will Gamble will be joining us to speak about a specific project on which they have used brick.

This will be followed by a short presentation from a technical design lead from a brick manufacturer, who will share technical, design and regulation details and tips on specifying their product sustainably. The presentations will culminate in a short Q&A.
Join us on Thursday 18 March at 1pm.
- Alice Brownfield of Peter Barber Architects on their project Ordnance Road, and the practice's iconic use of brick
- Michael Dillon of Mae Architects talking about the practice’s collaboration with StoneCycling on Sands End Arts and Community Centre in Fulham
- Will Gamble of Will Gamble Architects discussing the Parchment Works, shortlisted for AJ Small Projects 2020
This new series of webinars follows on from AJ Specification’s Materials in Focus articles, which set out simple rules for more sustainable construction.
